If you’ve lost teeth to decay or gum disease, you don’t have to suffer with a broken smile. There are new dental options and surgical procedures that can give you back a functional bite and chewing capabilities, as well the straight white smile you’ve dreamed of for so long: dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are permanent or removable replacements for missing teeth. As one of the better alternatives to bridges and dentures, dental implants can be custom made to your unique smile. Dental implants not only improve your speech, comfort, appearance and overall health but they also give you a comfortable fit and a new self-esteem, stemming from a beautiful smile.
The Dental Implant Process
Typically, dental implants are surgical procedures that involve a few months of work and healing. Dental professionals carefully work with your gum tissue, jaw bone, and their medically-certified materials to help you get your smile back in perfect shape.
During implant surgery, an incision is made in the gums so that the necessary screw can be drilled down into the jaw bone. After the screw is inserted, the gums are sutured to improve the healing process. During the 3-6 months of healing, the jaw bone will grow around the implant (Osseo Integration), and a temporary crown is placed on the tooth to help with chewing and speech. After the healing process is complete, an abutment is created as a base for the new tooth. A mold is made of the abutment, the abutment is removed for a more permanent restoration, and a crown is cemented onto the new implant (after another visit).
After Dental Implant Surgery:
After dental implant surgery, you should not partake in any activities for 48-72 hours to expedite the healing process. Drink fluids, apply ice packs (as needed) and DO NOT chew directly on the bone grafts. Dental implants do not require any reshaping of the teeth around them. However, the entire process for dental implants can take anywhere from 2-3 months for the procedure, and 3-6 months for healing.
